Yep, just like the GOP elite telling us the Republicans must pass amnesty if we ever want to win.....
Interestingly, despite what many here on FR think. soccer could start making serious inroads in the US market. For two reasons: 1) Games complete in less than two hours, really beneficial for fans not thrilled with dealing with baseball and football games lasting three hours or more and 2) soccer has figured out how to get sponsorship time even with no commercial stoppages per half. Small wonder why NBC Sports is very happy with their English Premier League package even though games start early in the morning on the East Coast (they've proved to be very successful at American football tailgate parties, of all things!).
That guy had little to do with it. The way the league, other players, and sportscaster reacted to it had by far much more to do with it.
Santa Clara is rarely hot in football season. Even August preseason it rarely hits 90.
Kansas City and Seattle appear to be the next ones to watch.
I agree on the soccer business.
I think if you had FC Bayern Munich featured weekly in the US with it’s long list of A-stars...people would recognize the superior play and talent, and get into this.
FIFA of course is corrupted to a major degree, but I’d prefer to watch a soccer game these days instead of football.
You hit the nail on the head.
I too watched yesterday, but for the first time in years, i was completely unattached.
Could be because my Saints don’t play til’ tonite, but we’ll see.
I loved those games during the NFL strike when they got amateurs to play as scabs. It was great.
Actually, the English Premier League already has Americans’ attention. We know all about the ups and downs of Liverpool FC, of all things....
Last year's season opener - the thrill is gone.
All the NFL has to do to bounce back is make it policy that anyone who kneels for the anthem gets a team beating before the game starts.
Hahahaaaaa. You mean one can live without professional football? Who woulda thunk it?
To Hell With The N F L.
Revenues come from multiple sources, chief being of course (collective) broadcast rights, but also sports memorabilia, team themed goods, concession rights, and oh, ticket sales/seat licenses.
In other words, the value of each independent franchise has nothing to do whatsoever with their 'record', but rather their 'home' association. Hence, the value of the SD Chargers actually increased when they relocated to LA, even if no one cares, nor attends any games.
The entire notion of fans rooting for a private business that just so happens to attach a label with a city/regional name, even though they may not even really play in that location, is a study ripe for pyschological analysis. Of course, the owners don't need to be told; they rake in large amounts of money playing off this phenomonem.
I've always enjoyed the game, and understand the almost impossible odds to construct a winning, dominant team. That's who I follow during the year. I don't cheer, fret or otherwise really care. My interest is in the incredible physical prowess of top tier players.
Which gets back to apparently overall declining viewership. I'm not convinced it's the protests. Rather, I think the game itself has been compromised. I put on the SNF game last night, and quickly lost interest. I kept it on while I did some other things around the house, and I distinctly remember the constant break to commercials.
As an entertainment vehicle, the entire point of the NFL is to sell advertising. I understand that's the core basis of the model. But when an entity becomes so arrogant that they literally claim "I drink your milkshake" (AKA I'll steal your wife and you'll beg me to treat *you* nice), it's obvious it's time to turn off the tube.
The NFL is a Socialistic organization, they distribute the income equally regardless of how good or how bad a team is.
Contrast with the “Socialist” sport of Soccer, where bad teams are relegated, and good teams are promoted.
Take the family camping.
Thank you
Teams that suck have a hard time selling tickets. Old story, nothing terribly new about it.
The Thanksgiving games will be sold out. Nobody will be in financial trouble, stadium revenue is a very small part of the pie. Nobody’s contracts will be shrunk, player salary is entirely paid for by the TV contracts and that revenue is guaranteed until 2020. Now after 2020 maybe, but maybe not.
Looks like Goff might not be the bust everyone thought he’d be.
