mr. mm told me that the City Pier on Anna Maria was heavily damaged, which is better than I expected.
I figured that it would have been done for. The fact that it even exists is amazing.

They and WINK News on the radio got us through. I lived on jersey Shore for Sandy. That’s two once in a lifetime storms too many. Not exactly on our retirement bucket list.
It was and is not horrible as hurricanes go. That’s not to say that there was no damage or that dealing with the aftermath is ever easy. The damage was along the lines of a Category 2 at worst. This storm was hyped for political reasons and by the MSM for commercial reasons, for ratings. There was a great deal of unnecessary evacuation of people not even in evacuation zones out of fear, because it was being played up as if there was going to be Category 3 level or greater damage to the entire state of Florida, which is total hyperbole. There were people on here who sincerely believed that Key West was going to be swept away. None of that happened, and it wouldn’t have happened even if the predicted storm track and strength had been accurate.
Every time I go out looking for materials for these hurricane threads, I learn more about them and their impacts and how to prepare for them. Each one is different. The 1935 Labor Day hurricane went through rapid intensification in the Florida Straits. Irma didn’t. That is just one example.

Yeah, the MSM hypes things. But the NHC has to factor in the worst case scenario in their forecasts. They don't call it the cone of uncertainty for nothing.

I guess to some folks, a home destroyed by wind is somehow more destroyed than a home destroyed by flooding. Any sage hurricane person will know the water is more deadly and destructive, in most cases, than the wind.
I do get it, I’m just not nearly so vested as some appear to be in catastrophizing every hurricane that comes down the pike. To me, that’s crying wolf and it’s also playing into the hands of the climate change alarmists who are seeking to politicize every single weather event as well as the hysterics of the MSM seeking higher ratings. There were people fleeing out of fear who were not even in any sort of evacuation zone, I ran into several way up here in NC near the VA border, from the Space Coast. That’s a bizarre waste of time and money on their part but it was motivated by panic, a deliberate panic. That is not good, and you will never get me to say that it is. People are going to stop taking evacuation orders seriously, too, because something is just wrong with the windspeed projections. This is not the first time this has happened.

Once again, YOU JUST DON”T GET IT. This was a Cat 5 a hundred miles south of Florida and forecast to come into Florida as such. You have the luxury of post-casting. Any fool can do that.
