The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

My daughter in zone A in Tampa Bay Davis Islands who evacuated to Vero spent the night without power after the foot of rain over there. They are well this morning and from internet can tell that their place in Tampa still has working power.

They may try to go back later today if the roads are open.

It looked to be just east of the Tampa Bay when I posted that. Went to bed right after that, since I figured my SIL & fam would be okay.

Checking in from Seminole County (Orlando). Power out, trees, branches down all over. But! Safe and well:) Just a mess to clean up. The challenge is the whole state has damage so triage is important. I hear some of the Keys are pretty rough, so we’ll see.

Irma just grazed the flat part of Cuba, no mountain. The Windy.com website showing Irma in the middle of Cuba was flat out wrong. Radar and satellite both showed the center brushing the coast.

The land interaction definitely helped weaken Irma, but that was due to the length of interaction. Irma slowed down passing the island.

This could have been every bit as bad as forecast.

Absolutely. It had a chance of beating Miami 1926, the most expensive hurricane on record. It could have wiped out a couple keys like 1935. But instead it took the Donna track and had even more Cuba interaction than Donna. Donna was a top 10 most expensive hurricane and Irma will be also, but much less expensive than it could have been.

List is old (2008 I think) so doesn't include Sandy. I don't think Sandy surpassed the cost of Miami 1926. Or maybe it did, Pielke Jr would know.
