You're right. NW is 315 degrees. If it starts going on the NW track that means for every mile west it also goes a mile North which would bring it to approach Florida at about Port St. Lucie. When the Florida Peninsula concaves west.
...But it must start going in that NW direction soon. Hopefully overnight that 290 degree track can go to something approaching 300 degrees or greater.
