Going to Elk Country next month where a group of family members relax around a beautiful fire-lit night on a grand sized deck...... with pine tree silhouettes framed in the moonlight while you also gaze up at the crystal clear brilliance of the Milky Way sweeping the night sky.

It's such a secluded place you cannot use gps nor cell-phones once you travel deep enough into the woods...... and we're at the highest point of the hills surrounding this wondrous place...... there are no sounds of traffic nor the usual daily hustles....there's a silence in the air that breathes refreshment..... When it rains it simply reveals an ambiance about it warm and inviting for a lazy afternoon ...with a steaming pot of homemade soup filling the air and the fellowship we share together...........All is well in the world.... there... in our Mountain retreat.

I always come back home more rested and at peace than any other place I've ever been.........there is something beautiful and almost magical about the forests of our country....and the best place for me to escape to. I visit and tour the ocean beaches..... but I live and breath anew in the Forests of Gods Country....therein is the difference for me.

Try the far northern OBX, you might be able to get a text out, that is if you can get any cell reception at all. No paved roads, got to have a 4x4 to get there. Wild horses, running free. You can hear them neighing back and forth to each other in the maritime forest at night. The best stargazing is tucked up against the Virginia border, 13 miles up from the end of the pavement. Practically no light pollution, the VA side is False Cape State Park. The whole island is a dune field, so it seems hilly particularly behind the tree line. In front of it, where storm overwash prevents growth of much vegetation, it’s wide open sand like a desert. Climate in fact is a xeriscape, despite the frequent rain and humidity. The wind dries it out, the salt acts as a desiccant and the sand drains very easily. So, there are a surprising number of desert-like species that can grow there if sheltered from the salt air, by a larger dune or a structure.
