The city council in Charlottesville, Va., voted unanimously Tuesday to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas Stonewall Jackson from Justice Park.
The 5-0 vote came just weeks after last months violent protests in the city, sparked in part by city officials plans to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Tuesdays vote also will expedite the relocation of the Lee statue.

Abraham Lincoln:
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."

The flag is tied today to that same bigotry, hatred, and violence that it used to be. Now it is too often also joined with the Nazi flag. There is no way to separate that flag with that history and reality. Being rude, insulting, trying to bully Republican and conservative voices that don't fit your view doesn't change things. It's embarrassing actually. And the people being so obnoxious in defending and promoting these symbols of hate taint everyone. You feed the Internet meme that FR is a bunch of racist, bigoted, and hate-filled extremists. A few voices ruin it for everyone. Shameful.
Yes, I know I and others get flamed every time we speak up but whatever. It would be great if people would step back and be respectful, not use foul language, through idiotic insults around, try to bully others into silence. Let's instead have respectful discussion, realize that conservatives and Republicans are not a monolithic group.
I see Americans acting like the Taliban and you are one of them.
I think the best response to this would to be to make high definition statues out of monolithic zirconia, an extremely hard, non-reactive material, so strong it is now machined to make dental caps and nuclear reactor shells.
Read this, and if you’re still consumed with white guilt, don’t bother replying, because anyone who agrees with carpetbagging Clinton Crime Syndicate member and VA Governor Terry McAuliffe about anything has no opinion of interest on Free Republic:

150 years from now people will look at our time and judge us by some measure that we cannot begin to imagine. Will they still be tearing down monuments.
And you speak for Jim?
You say dumbest things.
These are the crooked, slight-of-hand bigots that raped the people of Charlottsville of $4million in city tax dollars like it was chump change. Money paid to thugs to beat people up and intimidate the citizens.
Why haven’t the people of Charlottesville removed these charlatans? And why haven’t they removed their mysogenistic, racist, violence-promoting, BLM-paid for, mayor?
When are companies going to boycott Charlottsville because of their racist policies?
Nope - I speak for me after watching this forum since 1998, so keep telling us all how the patriots who fought for the Confederacy are hateful, awful men who should have their monuments removed.
And seriously, you should read the open letter to McAuliffe at the link I posted. It’s brilliant.
coup d'état [(kooh day- tah)]
A quick and decisive seizure of governmental power by a strong military or political group. In contrast to a revolution, a coup d'état, or coup, does not involve a mass uprising. Rather, in the typical coup, a small group of politicians or generals arrests the incumbent leaders, seizes the national radio and television services, and proclaims itself in power. Coup d'état is French for stroke of the state or blow to the government.
Enter from stage left: The community organizer, Barack Obama
Reno knows the left wants to cleanse all memories of the South. He supports that from the posts I’ve seen.
That was Great.
They are already talking about Jefferson and Washington....
Precisely.
Is there a college town anywhere that hasn't been hijacked by Marxists from New York and Massachusetts? Why are yankees so rude that they think that they can impose their politics on their hosts? They are guests yet no matter where they travel, they behave with unbridled arrogance and disrespect to locals and natives.
One of the problems we have these days is political correctness gone insane, to advance the insane anti-American leftist political agendas. You seem to have fallen in to that trap.
CGato
I’ll take it.
Put me on!
History is something that “I” cannot forget.
I am not a secessionist, but I am an AMERICAN!
The brave men who made that history WILL NEVER FALL to the pussies who are trying to destroy it.
Stonewall “KILL’EM, KILL’EM ALL” Jackson is an AMERICAN HERO.
As are General Lee, General, General Longstreet, General Pickett, General Semmens, General Barksdale, General Armistead, General Garnett, General Pender, General Renolds, General Zook, General Farnsworth.
All AMERICAN HEROES.
All men who were willing to fight and give the last full measure for what they believed in.
You apparently are suffering from brain constipation, or a BRAIN MAGGOT like some of our politicians.
These asshole people will never stop until there are NO AMERICAN HEROES OR HISTORY.
You are truly an IDIOT TROLL aren’t you.
AMERICAN history is what it is.
Our heroes are who they are.
Their statues deserve to be where they are and deserve to be preserved.
There is a term for people like you “STOCKHOLM SYNDROME”.
Agreeing with your enemies will not save you, they will just KILL YOU LAST.
