Dems say Trump agrees to short-term funding, debt package [Schumer & Pelosi's plan]
The Hill ^ | 09/06/2017 | Jordain Carney

Posted on 09/06/2017 10:16:50 AM PDT by GIdget2004

Top congressional Democrats said after a closed-door meeting at the White House on Wednesday that President Trump has agreed to fund the government and raise the debt ceiling through December 15 — despite a statement from Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) earlier in the day calling the idea "ridiculous."

"In the meeting, the President and Congressional leadership agreed to pass aid for Harvey, an extension of the debt limit, and a continuing resolution both to December 15, all together," Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a joint statement.

The announcement comes after Pelosi, Schumer, Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) met with Trump at the White House to discuss the fall agenda.

The deal, if it clears Congress, would set up a end-of-the-year cliff on both funding the government and the debt ceiling.

Completely eliminate...66....

Trump releases budget that slashes government programs
Autoplay: On | Off
President Trump's fiscal 2018 budget proposal would completely eliminate 66 federal programs, for a savings of $26.7 billion.
Some of the programs would receive funding for 2018 as part of a phasing-out plan.
Here are the programs the administration wants on the chopping block
Here are the 66 programs eliminated in Trump's budget (The Hill- 05/23/17)

This is where we are? Using Schumer and Pelosi as “competition” for Ryan and McConnell?

Good God. If we are at this point by Septemeber of 2017, we are well and truly screwed. Trump may as well switch parties, because Schumer and Pelosi will happily deliver him all the bills he could ever want to sign. Beautiful bills. Great bills. Some of them may even be beautiful AND great.

This is always the problem. Democrats are not afraid to govern.

My fear is honestly that Trump just wants to sign stuff. He needs accomplishments. And I don’t think he’s married to any idea aside from The Wall.

The question if I’m a Democrat right now, how much do I need to get back in order to President Trump his Wall.

Because I think I can get back quite a damn lot.

But if he pulls the Dems back to the political center...

Generally I agree with you - this is nuts. But McConnell and Ryan and McCain have already shown they’ll side with the Democrats anyway. Trump might as well beat em to the punch and get better deals then they are.

But what is the deal President Trump wants?

This was my problem all during the campaign. Aside from The Wall, on which to his credit, he has never wavered, President Trump has taken every position on every issue. On attacking the media and being politically incorrect and all that jazz, he’s been consistent. But on policy....things get a little dicey.

I’ve said from the beginning that President Trump is eventually going to find Schumer to be the person he wants to deal with.

A smart-ass New Yorker with a $500 haircut versus some jowly hillbilly? Who do you think Trump really wants to sit down and negotiate with?

If Trump feels like Obamacare appeal is truly dead, he may find the other team a lot easier to deal with in terms of both policy and personality. When Schumer says he has 49 votes, he has 49 votes (and probably 50 thanks to Collins).

Repukes don’t want anything, they don’t know how to govern. They aren’t even trying to cut deals. When the Dems get in they will push for X and they will need Repuke votes so they’ll have to shift it right in order to get it passed. That’s the only way you’ll get any rollback of anything because the Repukes don’t know how to deal from a position of strength so we’ll be forced to get a Liberal heavy bill with Conservative ideas rather than a Conservative heavy bill with Liberal ideas. Meh, I trust Trump enough to lead that.

I think Trump is America first and does want to stop illegal immigration (Which is a far cry from the last 24 years)
DACA has always been sticky because there’s no “nice” solution. I’m against blanket amnesty here and they should all be on a 10 year clock to get their citizenship the “normal” way or be deported and all other immigration from those areas is halted til the numbers stabilize.

Otherwise I’m aware that Trump will support single payer health care too - but my thought was always that the GOP would swing against that and push trough a reasonable health care bill ... boy was I wrong on that.

On the good side here - Trump might very well have planted the seeds to bring the political edges of the country back together just now. If we can do that without turning us into a socialist state I’ll settle for that.

And I will continue to call to establish a new political party and sink the GOP.

OK; so we’ll provide no relief funds for Houston ... Have I got that right? Yeah, you go ahead and run with that “plan.” Then you watch your 2018 “wet dream” fade to black.

Upon more reflection - This is probably just a slap in the face of the GOP for pulling the wall funding this year.

I think ultimately Trump will be much happier dealing with Majority Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi.

Save a few issues, they are closer ideologically. They control their members. And they aren’t a couple of hicks.

1. If that happens, (numerically not going to) the GOP will more than deserve it.

2. Unlike you, and the other cliff jumpers, Trump is not a member of the ideological puritan suicide squad.

I’m not an ideological purist by any means. But Trump working with Democrats instead of Republicans puts EVERYTHING back on the table: judges, single-payer healthcare, amnesty. Everything becomes a piece of a larger negotiation.

Perhaps if “Republicans” worked with Trump, but we both know the GOP is as bad as, if not worse than, the Demon Rats. I see no difference between the two parties - neither are worth a bucket of dog piss. If Trump decides to play them both against each other, I’m good with it. I have a vitriolic hatred for the “leadership” of both the GOP and the Dems. Frankly, I’d like nothing more than to see the GOP totally destroyed.
