But, where to go is the question.

Go West, young man!

Yes, I went through Matthew, and what you’ve said is true. You aren’t allowed back in, which is fine, since generally power has been turned off, sewage has been shut down, etc.

I’d say lives are more important than possessions. Take those things that are important to you and just figure the rest of it may or may not be there when you get back. But at least you’ll be there!

I always feel so sad when I read about people who died staying to protect their possessions. They usually didn’t even have much, so I can see why they’re terrified of losing it. But after a disaster, there are many agencies and charities that will replace the little they had and sometimes they’ll end up with something better than what they lost.

So take the important stuff and leave the rest. That said, I do think looters should be shot on sight! Evil, nasty people who should not be among us.

Thank you.

It all depends on the path of the hurricane. Where it goes will determine the best place to go. We have pets so that also influences our decision.

During Mathew we had a mandatory evacuation from Hilton Head. Many of the closer hotels inland were already reserved. Atlanta was the default choice because of the availability of hotels. Greenville was a good choice for Mathew. It took us 13 hours to get to Atlanta despite the fact that all of the lanes were devoted to outbound traffic. The earlier you can leave the better. The longer you wait the more difficult it is to find hotel rooms and the heavier the traffic along evacuation routes.

We lost 16 trees on our property. Six came down and the rest were leaning. Fortunately only one tree hit our garage with a glancing blow puncturing the roof. We came back a day after the green light was given. We only lost electricity for 12 hours. No flooding here in Windmill Harbour.

We have been here for 30 months. We didn't bargain for hurricanes. One of the selling points for this area is that hurricanes bypass us because we are so far inland given the indentation in the coast line. We are about the longitude of Cleveland.

Bluffton did well during the storm.

I have a 200 acre farm in east-central Pennsylvania with plenty of room, reloading equipment, 100, 200 and 500 yard shooting ranges, a subgun range, located 700 feet above sea level.

Would that suffice? :)

We had such an organized Tampa Bay evac for Charley in 2004. If us coastal dwellers must leave, I hope it is as streamlined as last time.

The front that is supposed to give Irma the steering turn just went thru here faster than anyone predicted on 7- , 5- or 3-day. If Irma so much as touches the Dominicas or Cuba (as predicted yesterday 7ast cone) it would offer maybe enough Hangup time to get this trough-on-wheels to glance her through the Keys or worst-case maybe through the Glades and out thru Cocoa...

Awesome.

Give me a couple of days to see where this beast is going and I’ll give you a call.

The cats would love two days on a farm.
