The Baofeng UV-5R can be had for as little as $25 through Amazon but there are better ones for those who have more discretionary spending available. Couple it with a taller better antenna and a Faraday Bag or make a Faraday cage out of tin trashcan and some cardboard. There are even roll up antennas you can hang from someplace high up to connect to your little hand held to get much better signals. Great advice Boomer - thank you!
