Even though you can get a Baofeng UV-5R for $25 ($29 now; prices are going up); I would highly recommend a better quality Baofeng or Yaesu. I currently have 3 Baofeng's and my favorite is what they are calling a 3rd gen UV-5R. It has a bit more power which helps with getting a clearer signal. The Nagoya 771 and a magnetic car antenna will help with reception depending if you're walking or in your vehicle. Here is a very inexpensive antenna from ebay. This portable antenna can be hung in a tree or from a flagpole as long as there's a few feet of rope that will insulate it from a steel flagpole that will give an extended range. For the price it's a good investment and can be taken with you if you need to bug out.
I have another post (241) here about charging it. I forgot to mention the USB cable to fit the charger.
This pack of Faraday bags will keep your radio, maybe a spare cell phone, and a laptop or two or tablet protected. My old laptop rarely gets used unless I travel so I just keep it in a bag.
If you choose to get one of the better, more durable, more expensive radios, like Yaesu; you will need to match up accessories to that product such as an extended antenna.
