It has been suggested to me by a cop I know that perhaps they were trying to protect the guy they were trying to get the blood from. He was a victim in the crash, a commercial truck driver and a reserve police officer.
It is possible, just possible, that they believed they needed the blood sample to protect him or help him in any ensuing litigation, challenge to his commercial driver’s license or to his badge.
None of that is meant to excuse any of this behavior. It is just a possible, albeit it very thin, explanation of their motivations.
Given that he is in a Coma, the hospital has his blood.
If LE needs it then get a warrant.
