NORTH KOREA SENTENCES TWO SOUTH KOREAN JOURNALISTS TO DEATH OVER A BOOK REVIEW

BY SOFIA LOTTO PERSIO ON 8/31/17 AT 11:42 AM

North Korea’s Central Court has sentenced two South Korean journalists and two media executives to death for reviewing a book that outlines a sprawling undergound capitalist economy in the secretive Communist state.

In an article on North Korean state media outlet KCNA, a spokesperson for the court said that the book—originally published in English and since translated into Korean—“insulted the dignity” of North Korea.

It declared that journalists Son Hyo Rim and Yang Ji Ho—who work for South Korean newspapers Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo—and Kim Jae Ho and Pang Sang Hun, who serve as director general of the two titles respectively, had received a death sentence by the Central Court of the DPRK.

Titled North Korea Confidential: Private Markets, Fashion Trends, Prison Camps, Dissenters and Defectors, the book was written in 2015 by two British journalists, Seoul-based correspondent for the Economist, Daniel Tudor, and Reuters' James Pearson. The authors claim that North Korea's attitude to capitalism is similar to Victorian Britain's approach to sex: "While everybody does it, few publicly admit to its existence."

The South Korean title mocks North Korea’s official name of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), turning it into Capitalist Republic of Korea, a capital offense in Pyongyang’s eyes.

On its cover, it features Pyongyang’s landmark Ryugyong hotel (also known as the “Hotel of Doom”) topped by a dollar sign, as three hands hold smartphones displaying a rising stock market graph.

Precious. I presume you are a Korean citizen, not a US citizen, thus more concerned with them than the lives of Americans?

LOL. Boy, you must get all your exercise from jumping to conclusions.

What an idiot...I'm not even going to tell you where I'm from, moron.

No, you are. Stop insulting other people because they don’t agree with you or your viewpoint. FR is better than that, please step up and be respectful.

Precious. I presume you are a Korean citizen, not a US citizen, thus more concerned with them than the lives of Americans?

So, let me get this straight. Having an interest in what happens in Korea means that one must be a Korean citizen who is OK with spilling American blood? OK, good to know . . .

Just so you know, I'm a white American citizen, born and raised in this country, and I'm married to a white American citizen who likewise was born and raised in this country. Therefore, by your logic, I suppose I should just sit back and wish for the two Koreas to blast each other into oblivion, right? I mean, unless one is a Korean citizen, one couldn't possibly care less about what happens there, right?

Are you or your wife and kids willing to jump onto the front lines to defend Korea? Or just happy to see other Americans do it?

I realize you’re trying to bait me, but I’ll give you a serious answer. A middle-aged man such as myself would be far more of a hindrance than a help in fighting a ground war. And my kids aren’t even teenagers yet, so they wouldn’t be much use over there either.

But I will say this: if my kids, when they’re old enough, told me that they wanted to go fight to defend South Korea, I would send them off with my blessings. THAT is how important I feel South Korea is to our own strategic interests, to say nothing of the good feelings that I have for that country — and the negative feelings I have towards the North Korean tyrant.

Now, let me turn it around on you. Since you obviously don’t care one whit about either Korea, I assume you’d be OK with it if Kim just gets ornery one day and dumps a few nukes down on Seoul? I mean, heck, as long as we’re not involved, who cares what happens to them, right? This wouldn’t bother you any, right?

May as well leave Reno89519 alone. He's an unadulterated moron who doesn't have two brain cells to rub together. He forms opinions and can't or won't permit opposing ones to contradict them.

Oh, and by the way, Reno89519, I was born in Brooklyn NY. My mother was born in Staten Island and my father in Montpelier Vermont. If you have the capability (bit of a big word for you, I know), check out my posting history and my personal page. I talk about my home city and my love of America a lot.

Stupid, arrogant SOB...

Hey, Reno89519, this quote's just for you!
