We don't know if there was a relationship and Jefferson was the father of Hemmings's children, and we'll probably never know.
But the idea defenders have of picking some undistinguished male Jefferson relative or other and putting the blame on him to save the great man's reputation is pretty shabby.
We know TJ tried to seduce a friend's wife in his younger days, so maybe there were some things he wasn't above doing.
