I've always heard rain described in the plural as rains. Most likely it refers to a series of rain events. Like the rain bands currently moving through Texas.

Also, aren't you familiar with the "Africa" song by Toto? As in "I bless the rains down in Africa (There's nothing that a hundred men or more can do)"?
