Probably had to pull it off when throwing up (or close to it) from being shot in the balls would be my guess.
PepperBalls wasn’t trained on the correct (and effective) wear of a gas mask. To prevent leakage (inhalation), a good seal around the mask is required.
Facial hair WILL prevent a good seal. He wasn’t wearing it properly.
