Your comparison to WWII and the Axis is perfect. We did NOT kill every Nazi - or evil opponent, but we fought off or killed enough of them to win the war and teach the ones who escaped death/capture a lesson and to force retreat.

No the comparison to WWII and the Axis powers is a logical fallacy of division/generalisation.

Japan (Emperor was exposed by his own pronouncement of implying he was not a "sun god"), Italy (Mussolini was executed by the Italian resistance, thus the RSI surrendered), and Germany (Hitler got BTFO in Stalingrad and the Battle of the Bulge, then suicide) all had their Center of Gravity destroyed.

That is how you actually win conflicts for the long-term, by destroying the rivals COG. Islam's COG is a whole different convoluted beast and lies in several areas that we are allied with. Yes, we are allied partly with this COG (A combination of physicality and a spiritual COG). The US is stuck for the long-term, too many tentacles everywhere, short-term progress will happen based on superior firepower though.
