The White House chief strategist Stephen K. Bannons departure was widely applauded, and not only by the Washington establishment Mr. Bannon has spent a career excoriating. After the news broke, traders at the New York Stock Exchange literally cheered, according to a CNBC report.
Yet the reaction was not uniformly positive. Supporters of Mr. Trumps America First nationalism worried that Mr. Bannons exit might sever the ties between the president and his electoral base.
Any move to fire Bannon, wrote the editor of the pro-Trump website American Greatness in recent days, is more dangerous to the future of the Trump administration than anything Robert Mueller can do.
But Mr. Trumps supporters are wrong to worry. Mr. Bannon is the latest in a long line of political advisers whose reputations are inflated after an election victory. Mr. Bannon may have given much thought to traditionalism and populism, may have publicized its themes as chairman of Breitbart.com, may be able to name drop René Guénon, Julius Evola, Jean Raspail, Neil Howe and William Strauss. But President Trumps inflammatory response to the clashes and killing last week in Charlottesville, Va., made it clear that it is he, and not Mr. Bannon, who maintains a gut connection with his most die-hard supporters. The most important culture warrior in this administration sits at the Resolute Desk.
Mr. Bannons reputation is overrated.
Yes, he transformed Breitbart from an irreverent blog into the iconoclastic tribune of nation-state populism, the anti-elitist ideology of border walls, travel bans and political incorrectness.
But his career as a political consultant has been short and checkered. As the president has observed, Bannon did not join Trumps campaign until August 2016, by which time Trump had secured the Republican nomination. Mr. Trumps victory was remarkable. It was also something of a black-swan event.

The libs said the same thing about George W Bush and Ronald Reagan.
He’s going to be more of a pain in the arse to the NYTimes and other filth in the media outside then in. Go to it Bannon. Please help make their lives
a living hell.
We will see if the Wall gets built or not.
We will see if the only illegal aliens removed are the most
hardened criminals.
Lots of time left...not even a year at this....and this in creature swamp still thrashing about.....let time do what time does so well.
Well, at least Kushner still has his job (*barf*). And a bunch of other liberals and globalists.
I am So Sick of “journalists” and pundits saying President Trump was referring to people in the Nazi, KKK and White supremacists groups when he said “some good people were there”! He was talking about the Freedom-Loving Patriots of all races, religions and gender who were there to save the Statue!! But you won’t hear about them from the Media.. Not even FoxNews!
So says the Slimes.
Yeah, I care what the slimes has to say.
Matthew Continetti is overrated.
... says a man nobody ever heard of.
Boy you really hate Bannon. Sweetie you’ve got the wrong target.
He’s our best friend, unless you’re a RINO then hate away.
Please removed GWB out of this post. He was horrible in retrospect.
Oh bah.
Go smoke or drink something... you'll feel better.
A career? No one heard of him before one year ago. >>
that’s for sure. he’s got a big mouth and ego to match..glad he’s gone.
Yup. I don't always agree with Bannon, but immigration, the border wall and draining the swamp are the three most important issues and Bannon was right on target.
Watch those issues to find out if they stay front and center in the Trump white house.
And watch who Trump puts in as Chief Advisor.
He will end up having the last laugh.
Don’t understand your comments. The libs said Reagan knows what he’s doing? What am I missing?
Trump was running on these issues long before Bannon came on board.
None of my business, but it sounded like DFG was agreeing with you - that it’s amusing how people think Trump is an empty vessel. The libs thought Bush and Reagan were empty vessels.
The liberals and elites generally think Democrat presidents are brilliant and Republican presidents are dumb - along with those who voted for them.
NYT is nervous now that the shackles have been taken off - as a citizen, Bannon can say what he wants, how he wants without them trying to smear Trump for the “crassness” (TRUTH).
