My dad was combat infantry in WWII. He told me that when they were pulled back, the Red Cross would be there selling donuts for a dime. My dad said they'd all keep walking and go to the Salvation Army where donuts were given to the soldiers. He told me that every GI would throw a dollar in the bucket for the free donuts.
I listened-and to this day the United Way gets nothing from me.
I do donate to the Salvation Army regularly.

same here. Not a dime for the United Way. Caused me some trouble when I was employed, but they didn’t get a nickel. The majority of the officers on my shift felt the same way. No money. No way.
