I don’t know. 30 years of reconstruction is sort of glossed over in our history books. My family wasn’t Southern so we didn’t experience it but it wouldn’t surprise me (doesn’t surprise me) that there are so many who still remember the North extracting their pound of flesh. In fact, it occurred to me that these monuments they want torn down may well have been the North’s “apology” for Reconstruction’s crimes. Notice they were all erected AFTER Reconstruction.

Correct, but the main failure of Reconstruction was that the south was beaten ENOUGH into submission & the traitorous Dem party allowed to revive.

Great weakness of Reconstruction was its corruption, and willingness to ignore both white & black “politicians” who were sucking off the public teat. Blame to go around, but still not crushing the Ds is something we’ve paid for for over a century.

Possibly because it was only ten years - 1867 to 1877.
