ROADS TO MOSCOW - Al Stewart

I can't think of many other popular songs about Stalin's Gulag. Al Stewart also performed what is probably the only song about Adolf Hitler's purge of Ernst Roehm and his followers (The Last Day of June, 1934)

I bet that more than a few of those Methodist "C.C. Riders" got hastily chased out of towns on their horses!     :-)

In the note under that other, bluesy version of the song at the link you provided, it says that singer was aka "Wee Bea Booze".   That name almost sounds like "I. Juan Hooch", or something like that!     :-)

(You are certainly a wealth of knowledge, Fiji Hill!)

The Wee Bea Booze version of the tune reached #1 on the Rhythm and blues charts in January, 1943. Gertrude "Ma" Rainey recorded what is probably the first version, done in a Dixieland jazz style, in 1925. In 1958, dancers discovered that Chuck Willis' 1957 version was a perfect fit for the Stroll, one of the dance crazes of that year.
