So.... Young man, wrong turn, slowly driving through a hostile crowd, hears a thud, panics, foot slips, mob attacks from all sides, puts it in reverse....

Looks like that is EXACTLY what happened. If you have never actually driven a muscle car much you don’t realize that even a modest push on the accelerator will cause an enormous thrust.

Especially when under attack. One doesn’t know if those “nothing personal here” bottles of urine thrown at his car are actually flammable liquid. I guess some think he should have got out and checked.

Let’s see...which is a more realistic scenario:

Man jumps in prized car he probably saved all his money to purchase, then decides to run protesters down, knowing his car is going to be damaged doing it, and he will be caught and thrown in jail.

Man driving prized car in unfamiliar hostile environment, has things thrown at car, has car hit by some object being swung like a baseball bat, has people crowding around car, and loses control of car.
