They intend to use this event as a catalyst to remove all Confederate monuments.
When they are done with that they will move on to some other aspect of American history.
Anyone resisting the erasure of history will be tarred as a racist white supremacist.
Everyone who is not behind Antifa, BLM and the rest must be racists, bigots, sexists, homophobes, Islamophobes, etc.
No defense of American history, values, culture or way of life will be tolerated.

The young fellow who went barreling through the crowd apparently had some severe mental problems, which probably contributed to his really extreme over-the-top response to the situation.

But I wonder - had the Antifa shock troops and the BLM people NOT shown up, would there have been any overt violence?

There were a LOT of people to despise who showed up in town. But the most despicable were the Charlottesville authorities who told the police force to stand down.
