My assessment or speculation.... I think it's possible the driver was so scared he thought those people would get out of the way when you hear that bit of acceleration. They didn't nor did the cars that appeared to be blocked by the same crowd. He didn't have time to stop...No where to go. All he had time to do was brake a bit, too late...
It was chaos. And he acted like a man running for his life. That's my take at this point.
I could be wrong, we'll see.
