The vehicle was being attacked by thrown objects before it ever went into the crowd. Some of those right side protesters and others involved were pinned in parking lots against their cars by violent mobs before they could leave. The video is out there. I've seen it.
And as soon after the suspect vehicle came to a stop before reversing, it was immediately attacked by individuals with bats and clubs. In a blink of an eye.
And your ask, "What was he scared of?"

I don’t care about his fright after that, it’s irrelevant. It’s a consequence, not a motivation.
That's not surprising, considering the vehicle had already sent at least one person flying through the air while it was moving forward, before it stopped and then reversed...
