Considering that both sides came looking for trouble I’m not sure I blame the police for not wanting to wind up in the middle, job or no job.
Crass as it may seem, there are two sides here. Pick one.
What ?
Did the Lefty Mayor or McAwful call
back the police ?
One of them did .
If the police and National Guard knew that, and they should have been expecting it, it should have been their job to keep sufficient DMZ between the groups to avoid major violence. Let them close enough to yell at each other but not close enough to do mutual harm. This was done very effectively at last year's party conventions. There are good models to follow. Their lack of readiness and especially their backing out when things got going is inexcusable.
It’s possible that if they did their jobs that woman might not have been killed.

I do. It’s their job. If they don’t want to do it, let them quit.
No different than the "revolutionary" mischief that was manufactured circa 1969... when cops stood their ground.

The difference?
Back then American "police" departments, and culture, hadn't been infiltrated and subverted by rainbow SJW's... yet.
FAIL.
It was a strange time, 1975. A big shark terrorized the nation in a movie called Jaws; Lynette Squeaky Fromme and Sara Moore popped off a few shots at President Gerald Ford; Patty Hearst was finally nabbed in San Francisco after her kidnapping by machine-gun-toting terrorists; and the number-one song was Love Will Keep Us Together.
That year, Denver ranked as one of the nations three top cities for bombings. The Denver bomb squad was dispatched 339 times, picked up 73 explosive devices and handled 24 actual explosions.

I blame Virginia’s governor, the odious Terry McAuliffe, for not ordering the Virginia State Police to Charlottesville by last Friday. This confrontation was brewing for months before August 12th. Everyone knew there was serious potential for violence, and a “police wall” separating the two groups would have staved off much of it.
