A Virginia high sent a disturbing letter to parents and students announcing they would be selecting students for Advanced Placement and honors classes at least partly based on skin color, a concerned parent told Fox News.
Martin Luther King, Jr. must be turning over in his grave.
A parent forwarded me a copy of the letter sent from John Handley High School in Winchester.
“Through our collective work, advanced classes such as AP and Honors will have proportional representation,” read the letter. “Proportional representation is 40% White, 35% Hispanic, 12% African American, 10% mixed race.”
The letter went on to explain that public schools across the country “continue to see outcomes that are disproportionate by race and social class.”
“American demographic trends indicate that America will be a majority minority nation in the next 25 years,” the letter read. “Therefore, the new work of American public schools is to develop systems to address disparate outcomes.”
Interesting -- I thought the work of American public schools was to teach kids how to read, write, multiply and divide.
A school district spokesperson reached out to me and strongly denied that they have any policies dictating racial quotas for advanced courses.

This is actually fake news. The letter does not say that they will enroll students based on skin color; it talks about a goal of proportional representation, but doesn’t contemplate using race as a factor in qualifying students for enrollment in those classes.

I’ve read that some schools just did away with advanced classes altogether to make everyone equal. It’s insanity.

Well! This school is my alma mater....my how times have changed.
A few interesting facts about the city and school:
Winchester city is incorporated, one of the few smaller cities in Virginia to do so so. Therefore the surrounding larger county population has its own school system. Last I checked, Winchester’s population was around 30,000.
Handley is the only high school in the city school system, but there are several private Christian academies in the area that have seen a lot of growth in the last 20 years. It is an interesting institution, in that it is PRIVATELY ENDOWED by a large sum of money left by its founder. As I recall, it is has never been forced to adopt various State schemes in order to stay operational.
As already noted, Winchester is predominantly white, but with a growing influx of Hispanics, like most places in Virginia. Over the last 30 years it has started to become a bedroom community of Washington DC, which explains its liberal tilt in recent elections. It is the home of former Senator Russ Potts, who famously switched sides after getting elected.
Winchester is also home to Shenandoah University, which formerly was a small musical college with a high percentage gay population. Not that there is anything wrong with that... S.U. in recent years has aggressively expanded, finding a willing partner in the city council, who systematically ignore the will of the city residents. Winchester is a historically wealthy and conservative little ideal city, being transformed by progressive ideology; long time residents can’t put up with it, and have left.
This news report does not surprise me at all.
Don't they have a dictionary at a school??? I do not think that word ('work') means what they think it means.

They reserve 3% for ‘other’. Other in Winchester is about 6 percent of which about 2.5 percent are Asian.

Sadly, this type of “affirmative action” is the reason that many people decide not to have a black physician involved in critical medical decisions/actions. This crap has been going on since the mid 1960s; how many generations does it take for individuals to compete on their OWN merits?

Dumbing down America one proportional student at a time.
The way to improve “disparate outcomes” is not to artificially manufacture rewards for academic outcomes that have not been obtained by the work of the students, but to work harder at improving the actual academic results wherever those results have not been achieved well in the work of the students.
The idiots in academia are flying opposite to Martin Luther King’s dream of a world where folks are judged on their own character and NOT on the color of their skin. Instead, they intend to judge students worthy and unworthy BECAUSE of the color of their skin, and manufacture rewards to some who have not achieved them academically. This is not “moving forward” it is moving backwards.
That is the Turkish run outfit isn’t it?
