False headline. The article is about ILLEGAL pot farms.

Typical Yahoo “news” BS.

"Sorry, but I'm just not buying this. This sounds like typical eco-scare propaganda to me.

Depending on the size of the farm, they could be right.

My wife and I owned a hydroponic store (we don't smoke, but I have no aversion to making legal money off those who do). The nutrients used in hydroponic systems need to be flushed at least weekly to maintain the TDS levels and prevent one-sided salt buildup that would stunt or kill the plants. The effluent is pretty concentrated, as the water in the solution evaporates and intensifies the solution.

On a large scale, this runoff could be quite detrimental to ground water and soil. It's doubtful that these growers are using sophisticated and expensive filtration systems to guard against contaminant release.

While I am not a legal pot proponent, I am very skeptical of this study.

Seen a similar one about corn that said it should be banned.

If you see, or are in the presence of, marijuana ...
run do not walk!
Marijuana, along with such notable weeds as Canadian Thistle and Chicory,
are list as “noxious weeds”
They are “a nuisance and detrimental to health, saftey, cleanliness and comfort of the inhabitants of the township.”

Why someone is outback of my property sniffing, or rolling around in, my “noxious weeds” is beyond me?

simply touching plants has landed law enforcement officers in the hospital.

Is it a new hybrid that's been crossed with Poison Ivy?

Not gonna happen. There is NO nutrient that will make plants "contact toxic" as is being claimed here. I am both a degreed chemist and was raised on a farm, so have at least "some" notion of ag chemicals. The only farm chemicals that "might" so something like that are "some" (not all) pesticides and herbicides. But even then I seriously doubt it.

I detect another reason to shut people out of (their own) National Forests.

For their safety.

I am pretty sure there is NO TAX being collected on this pot growing. These are illegals working for the cartels & using public land to the point where hikers, bikers, and horseback riders DARE NOT go anywhere near what they are doing.

I used to live near Tahoe National forest, and trails that riders had used for years were no longer safe.

Subsequently, the LEO’s won’t go there either. A deadly game of cat & mouse.

I understand legal pot farms use a lot of evil electricity and a lot of water.

“I understand legal pot farms use a lot of evil electricity and a lot of water.”

Though I disagree with electricity being “evil”, indoor marijuana farms do use an incredible amount of electricity, even when using efficient LED lighting.

“Xcel Energy, which serves most of urban Colorado, sells some 300 gigawatt hours of electricity to pot growers per year, or enough to power some 35,000 homes. The U.S. marijuana growing industry could soon buy as much as $11 billion per year in electricity.”
“Jackson also reported that Xcel Energy has seen significant load growth since 2012 due to the passage of the law, with over 300 GWh now being consumed by pot growers.”
https://cmgstatesmanenvironment.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/marijuana.jpg

The grows happening in the 4-Corners area are using electricity produced by coal fired plants which are soon to be closed down due to environmental regulations, with no replacement plants even scheduled to be built yet.

“John Morris, policy and regulatory affairs director for energy efficiency consultant CLEAResult, reported that one pot grower in the West is converting a 90,000-square-foot warehouse to produce the plant and that despite installing energy efficient lighting and other devices, including a $2 million solar panel on the roof, that grower still expects to pay around $1 million a month for electricity.”
Here’s the FR thread on that operation:

The dope growers have diverted most springs and creeks dry for their grows here in Humboldt County. Cal fish & game are the lead agency in most of the raids.

We have No-Go areas in the Smokies too. I’m thankful that the fellows who have the hunting lease on my property keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
