It was the fake news that got him. Unfortunately, almost no one was aware of the depth and breadth of media perfidy at that time, so public opinion was swayed. That gave congress the support they needed to move forward with impeachment.

Nixon resigned because he had lost the support of the republican caucus. He could have survived impeachment but the political cost to the party would have been catastrophic. It was bad enough but as it was, we elected Ronald Reagan six years later.
