Since normally it’s the projectiles, not the firearms, that pierce bodies and body armor, the locals must be turning in spears and such.
Or maybe they tried sharpening the muzzles on their guns during the ammo shortage; and that’s why they are turning them in now.
That is determined by what you put into the weapon.
