From the article: "The statement, issued to the New York Times as it prepared an article, emphasized that the subject of the meeting was not a campaign issue at the time.
From the press release: It was a short introductory meeting. I asked Jared and Paul to stop by. We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at the time and there was no follow up.
Understanding that journalists fall at the bottom end of the intellectual scale, there's nothing "misleading" in the statement at all -- while the article is misleading.
It's a simple SAT grammar problem:
In the July 8 statement, to what does the "it" found in the clause, "but it was not a campaign issue," refer to?
A. Russian collusion
B. A short introductory meeting
C. Adoption of Russian children
D. James Comey

It wasn’t a *short introductory meeting.” It was a full meeting at which they expected to get ammunition for the campaign.
