50 years today July 29, 1967 the USS Forrestal Fire took place. This 2917 calendar lines up on the exact day.

How many times does that BS story have to be refuted? McCain may be a lot of things but he was almost a victim of the Forrestal fire and not the culprit.

One of my cousins married a pilot who was on the flight deck when it happened.
In his home office he has pictures of some of the pilots, John Rotten is in one with him.
Seeing the pictures I asked him about it.
He agreed that McCain had nothing to do with the accident, that a missile started the whole thing.
His comments on McCain were that he was a terrible pilot whom everyone on the ship hated because he was an ass whose ego was bigger than the ship.
This urban legend will survive as long as the internet does.

Because he has never admitted that a bomb dropped from his aircraft as he scrambled out ( uninjured) started a ctastrophic chain of events that killed his ground crew and the pilot and ground crew of the aircraft that was struck

You wont find any mention of him in McCains memoirs or speeches even though he and his men died on the deck next to McCain
And that is why McCain explains that he flew off the Forrestal back to Saigon with the NYT reporter who came out by helo to interview the story and look up the son of the Pacific Fleet Commander

McCain can claim that he was the very first uninjured crew member to leave the Forrestal for “ some badly needed R&R” while the ship was still burning, missing the memorial service for his dead crew
