Charlie Gard:A cruel AND ignorant campaign(Barf Alert)
melaniephillips.com ^ | July 26th 2017 | Melanie Phillips

Posted on 07/27/2017 9:13:58 AM PDT by Ennis85

The agonising case of Charlie Gard, the 11-month old baby dying from a rare form of mitochondrial disease, is edging towards a no less agonising conclusion.

Today, his parents agreed that he should be transferred from Great Ormond Street hospital in London (GOSH) to a hospice to spend there his final period of life.

The hospice was a compromise. The parents have been fighting the plan for their baby’s end of life care just as they had fought the decision that he should no longer be kept alive. They wanted to bring Charlie home to die. The hospital refused to agree because of the difficulties of providing the particular ventilation and other procedures for Charlie at home, and the potential for causing him yet more distress or even causing him to die before he got home.

The court that has been attempting to arbitrate this heartbreaking dispute has set a deadline of noon tomorrow for the parents to find a team that can support Charlie for the days the parents want to spend with him at the hospice. Otherwise he will be taken off his life support shortly after being transferred.

The parents deserve only the most profound sympathy. Their unremitting rage at the hospital has to be seen in the context of mind-altering grief. In such a state, however, it is sometimes not possible to make decisions that really are in the best interests of their child. In this case, moreover, it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that their stress has been hugely compounded by one of the most cruelly ill-conceived campaigns of recent times.

She’s blaming America for Charlie Gard. I ripped her one on FB. Melanie is ignorant about America although she frequently writes about it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More distress than smothering to death? Causing him to die before he’s... I don’t know... dead?
Stupid liberals, want it both ways. Get the hospital to withdraw treatment AND blame the parents for the hospital’s poor public relations with regard to patient’s rights.
OH THESE POOR PEOPLE, THINKING THAT THEY HAVE ANY INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS TO SPEAK OF!! DON’T THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE SERFS AND WE ARE THEIR MASTERS (until we disagree then there’s hell to pay, all hail leftist journalists right until they get lined up against the wall).
do all these people demonstrating outside the court and shrieking that Great Ormond Street hospital were “murderers”, or writing ignorant and intemperate op-eds in the American media declaring that only the parents had the right to decide what was in the best interests of their child, really believe that parents know better than neurologists about damage that has been done to the brain?
The parents had obtained a second opinion which conflicted with that of those “omniscient” neurologists.
You choose to believe who you want to believe. If the Americans who asserted that there was, months ago, a possibility of cure had respectable credentials, the question boils down to your choice of who to believe - and your “faith” in death as an alternative preferable to trying to save life. The parents chose differently than Melanie Phillips presumes to say is the only choice. The government of Britain demonstrated that its subjects actually did not have the choice they might have thought - because they actually live under more of a tyranny than they previously suspected.
What is the hospital really afraid of, the parents heading straight to a plane to fly to the US where he might receive treatment?
SHE IS RIGHT ON THIS CASE.
it was a cruel hoax...and yes, the hysteria in the media kept this going...can’t blame the parents, but they were victimized.
everyone, media and, yes, even the right to life people got attention/ It does not help the right to life cause when they go along with this charade, without understanding who they are condemning and what they are supporting.
The parents deserve only the most profound sympathy.
Then you should try to grant it. It is most presumptuous of you to assume that the people who donated $1.5 million did so out of malice.
But your precious government “health service” must not be put to shame by superior quality health care which can to attained by society than can be done by government.
Then she should blame the Daily Fail which helped gin this up and the British pro-life people who stood outside the Great Ormond Street Hospital holding signs. She blames American Thinker which has approximately 4 readers.
Brits always default to baiting America when their country goofs up.
SHE IS RIGHT ON THIS CASE.
So you believe that Charlie was the property of the State and his fate should be in the hands of heartless bureaucrats and the parents should have no say in his medical treatment and you are just fine with that?
What the Hell are you doing on Free Republic?
What got me interested in this case is that I have a friend who is a well known pediatric genetics researcher. He said there was no known cure for this genetic disease subtype,and wanted to know what physician would even think to offer a treatment. This was before his name was released.
Knowing that this was an incurable death sentence, I wondered what sort of doctor would offer a hopeless treatment. Then, it turns out that this doctor never reviewed his medical records. That is malpractice. It was a hoax.
There is a difference between a “cure” and a “treatment”.
A “cure” -— if by that you mean a full restoration of the severely damaged organs and systems, and a reversal of the underlying disease process -— was never in the offing.
But treatment -— which held out the small possibility of avoiding further losses, or even achieving some modest developmental gains -— was worth looking into, to these parents who were determined to use their own resources to advance the wellbeing of their own sick child.
In any case the GOSH and the NHS people are preaching the Word that, “Living, we live into the State, and dying, we die unto the State, where fore, living or dying, we are the State’s.”
They run out the clock, abrogate the parents’ ability to seek medical advice or treatment from anybody but the omnicompetent NHS, arrange for the press conference before the parents even get the scans, then put on their Secular Ethics face and
slap their ace on the table.
“There. Done deal. Who’s your Daddy?”
NO THAT’S NOT WHAT I SAID.
if YOU HAD READ THE ARTICLE you would have seen the tragedy in this case. Even chas Krauthammer said not only was there no hope for recovery for this child, but he was in constant pain.
having said that, he also said, in this case, the parents should have the final say.
In the US, if parents don’t believe in blood transfusions, the courts can mandate them to save a child.
what I am doing on freeper is countering the hysteria of the media and suggesting that Right To Life Advocates, look closely into a medical situation before they get on the bandwagon.
Yup, a hoax, and he had a monetary interest in his research treatment.
Very sad for the parents who were victimized by all the do gooders that don’t take the time to review the situation.
In the US, if parents don’t believe in blood transfusions, the courts can mandate them to save a child.
But right now they can't mandate them to KILL a child. In Great Britain the courts did exactly that. They ordered the execution of this child. Trust me they will be going after the old people next. Pretty soon it will be a capital crime to be born defective or to live beyond your usefulness to the state.
what I am doing on freeper is countering the hysteria of the media and suggesting that Right To Life Advocates, look closely into a medical situation before they get on the bandwagon.
No what you are doing is advocating for government ownership of a child's right to life.
How about letting God decide. This child, even after heroic medical measures would die. To artificially keep a child on machines...WHILE THE CHILD IS SUFFERING CONSTANT PAIN...is cruel.
To allow a money grubbing Dr to take advantage of the parents is also cruel.
So the hysteria about “ executing “ the child is exactly what distorts the honest and needed discussion of right to life.
Either you did not read the medical issues about this case or you just want to distort anyone’s criticism of your hysterical comments and attack them.
How about letting God decide.
You mean the NHS?
Of course, the NHS is where the British people get their blessings and the NHS has the power of life and death over every subject.
In Europe the State is God.
The State has decided. God has spoken.
