A homeless man was attacked by an alligator while he was bathing in a Florida retention pond Monday, officials said.
The 9-foot-alligator attacked the man around 10 a.m. in Port Charlotte, located south of Tampa, WFTX reported.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the victim as 68-year-old Fredric Iman, who is reported to be homeless. He sustained injuries to his left foot and leg, left hand, and groin.
Official said after the attack, Iman went to a nearby surgery center where an employee called 911. In a recording of the 911 call released by authorities, the employee is heard saying "it looks like his, his pants are torn. It ate his toes off."
Iman was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, where his condition has improved from serious to stable.
While some neighbors were shocked at the gator attack, one told WWSB-TV she always looked forward to seeing the gator she named "Charlie"
"I'm a little upset because the gator is probably going to be euthanized," Lisa Posten said. "People that live in Florida, they know not to go in these waters, this is where these gators live."

Going in the water that early in the day - or after 4 PM in FL is bone-headed stupid. Dabbling one’s toes in the water splashing is bone headed stupid.
Gator was just culling the herd....
Go Gators!
This little piggy went to market...this little piggy
stayed home.....this little piggy had.........
It’s a pork thing.
I’m not particularly afraid of wildlife in the water or the woods or anywhere else but common sense is a good thing. It’s even good in the city.
An updated cartoon might have an alligator from Cocoa Fl. lying there picking his teeth with a cane.
Now, a 12 foot gator is a people eater...
But a 9 foot gator is not very big or very old.... figure half of that was tail. Inexperienced gator probably thought those toes looked like little ducklings paddling around from the perspective of its resting spot on the bottom.
And little ducklings and ducks are about the right size to interest a little ol’ gator like that, and are its usual food, unless of course the folks around there were irresponsibly feeding it hotdogs and scraps. It was probably as surprised as the guy was when it came up to grab and run with a couple of ducklings and ended up with a human foot instead, but being a dumb reptile it’s better equipped to grab than spit.
Guy was injured in the groin too, maybe the gator thought it saw a pair of fuzzy ducklings ...
Poor gator is probably going to die of food poisoning anyway.
The gators nickname is Dick Morris.
That could darn near ruin your whole day.
My Daughter was swimming in Ponce de Leon springs. She was enjoying herself so much that she didn’t want to leave.
Finally I decided I would just have to make her then I saw a sign. Basically the same as the one you posted. I pointed it out to her and she was out of the water immediately.
Actually the chances of a gator in that spring is very small tho it is in fact a natural spring with a good sized creek running off from it.
Imán is Spanish for magnet, who’s pull this gator couldn’t resist.
Poor stupid man.
That'll leave a mark!
Big croc. Is that an actual shot?
You know about the most amazing images.
Surely this one is a fake ...
Must have been the attraction to his soap-on-a-rope.
Damn near spit my cold adult beverage out on that one!!
Thank you for another FR tale of Florida. I’m just waiting for a few more, so I can write an Elmore Leonard/Carl Hiaasen-style book.
