I use algebra constantly: in the grocery store, to get the best cost per item. (I don't trust the signs, you would be surprised how often they are wrong.) Often 4 six packs are cheaper than a 24 pack. How much does a 12 oz package of bacon costs per pound. Compare the prices for 1.5 quart and 1.75 quart ice cream boxes.

What I can't stand are these lazy idiots who don't want to learn math and then later can't figure out why they can't make their balloon mortgage payment or they are 60 thousand dollars in credit card debt. (Hint: the minimum payment isn't enough)

Another use is calculating the meat content vs. price between different fat grades of ground beef.
