Could be. Another possibility is that Delta, being she had a preferred seat, gave it to a United Employee who needed to dead-head to where the flt was going. There’s been some of that brought to light lately.
Bumping paying passengers for employees and their families goes on all the time. It’s more prevalent now. Remember that the next time you’re #1 on the upgrade list and all of a sudden a relative of a FA goes to the one empty seat.
