Hate them back. It works for me.

The whole assumption that holding the high moral ground will dominate the conflict is in error. The animals have no morals, and consider the whole concept of morality as a sign of weakness.

The solution will be profoundly distasteful, and the Jack Ketch who uses it will never be invited to dinner. It will be the price paid for our freedom.

Exactly. Try holding the "high moral ground" against a rabid animal. Doesn't work.
