California stayed in the Union due to the dominance of Northern settlers in Northern California. However, Southern California, with a large number of Southern settlers and Hispanics dissatisfied with land laws and high taxes imposed by Sacramento, were pro-secession. Union troops and northern California militia suppressed any rebellious tendencies in Los Angeles and environs.

My knowledge of California regarding the Civil War is very sparse. This at least gives me some idea of what was going on there at that time.
