The key is to live near Albuquerque, but not in it. I've been in the East Mountains for over 20 years, south of 40. The weather is nicer, the people are friendly, and in 20 minutes you're in town.

I recall driving east on I-40 from AZ one night and seeing a glow on the horizon for an hour before I crested a ridge to see Albuquerque sprawled out below.
Quite the sight.

Agreed on the East Mtn part. Grew up in ABQ, moved out in '92. So near, yet so far. Breaks my heart to see my hometown get So Big, and overrun with crime.
...and a panhandler at every corner.
