For the past few years, the Sears near me has been stocking less and less - shelves are spaced further apart with less items displayed on each aisle. Fewer free-standing displays for new or featured items, lots of shelf end-caps used for "clearance" merchandise. It's not uncommon to find two or three departments being served by one employee at one register. Yes, it can seem "empty" yet have a check-out line.

One other thing I've noticed: lots of burned-out ceiling fluorescent lights in the ceiling fixtures. It's like the place is slowly fading away.

Other than Craftsman tools, the only other product I'd buy there was paint. It was reasonably priced, easy to use and wore like iron.
Three years ago I went into my local store to buy more paint and the entire department was gone. Shocked the hell out me.
I ended up at Lowe's and while the quality of their paint was okay, I just don't think it'll wear like the Sears ...
