Shucks, before the 2016 POTUS race, you could have said that about, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Florida & Iowa, etc. Both New Jersey and Virginia have had many Republican governors, over the years...the latest being Chris Christie for the last eight years in New Jersey!!!
Me....I’m a low life,...I would immediately layoff 30,000 “totally useless” federal government workers that reside in Virginia, crack down on any person that smacks of illegal or fraud voting, Turnout the “coal miners, etc.” of VA, and watch the voting demographics change overnight!!!

Donald Trump was a unique candidate who was literally campaigning against both parties, i.e., the Washington Establishment. Trust me, NJ and VA will elect Dems this year to the statehouse.
Gillespie barely won the GOP nomination against Corey Stewart by about 1 percent, a Trump-style candidate who used immigration and the preservation of Confederate monuments to forge a tough coalition. I doubt that Gillespie will be able to tap into that constituency. I had a one hour one on one briefing with Gillespie on immigration in preparation for his Senate try in 2014. He is a RINO who has adopted the Chamber of Commerce position on immigration. He is not going to defeat Dr. Northam.
No Rep is going to be elected Governor of NJ following Christie who has very low approval ratings. NJ is going Dem this time.

You are living in an alternative reality. None of this is possible and you don't have a clue as to the changing demographics of VA. I was active in Fairfax County GOP politics and acted as both a poll watcher and election officer. The demographic changes over the last 30 years in NoVA have been stark. One third of Fairfax County, the largest county in the state, is foreign-born. In 2012 the ballot in Fairfax County was also in Spanish, the first time any county in the state had a foreign language ballot.
Kerry won FC in 2004, the first time a Dem did that in 40 years. Obama and Hillary increased the numbers in the margin of victory. Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William counties along the city of Alexandria are providing huge Dem margins that more that offset the Rep advantage in rural Southern VA. And 20% of the population of VA is black which makes cities like Richmond heavily Dem. A large turnout helps the Dems. I will say with the utmost certainty that the well organized, funded Dem machine in NoVA will turn out huge numbers for Northam. And many in the GOP will stay home with Gillespie as the candidate. I would not vote for him if I was there.
1. A state under Democratic control must hit the wall before the locals elect a Republican. Chicago, Detroit etc. have not hit that wall or there are no locals who actually work for a living and pay taxes.
2. Trump is in the process of identifying those "Totally Useless" thus redundant federal employees. - EPA anyone, Dept. of Education ?
3. LOCAL elections are the only ones that count. Voting in the Primaries to replace the current Member of the local and federal G'ment is where it must happen
