Trump just ended a long tradition of celebrating Ramadan at the White House
The Washington Post ^ | June 24, 2017 | Amy B Wang

In the early days of December 1805, a handful of prominent politicians received formal invitations to join President Thomas Jefferson for a White House dinner.

Whatever Jefferson could have foreseen for the young country’s future, it appears the modern-day White House tradition of marking Ramadan with an iftar dinner or Eid celebration has come to an end.

Ramadan, which falls on the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, started on May 27 this year and ends at sundown Saturday. Muslims around the world will mark the end of the holy month by celebrating the holiday Eid al-Fitr, the “feast of breaking of the fast.”

For the first time in nearly two decades, Ramadan has come and gone without the White House recognizing it with an iftar or Eid celebration, as had taken place each year under the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations. In recent weeks, several former White House staff members told The Post they would usually begin planning an iftar “months in advance” and didn’t anticipate the Trump White House could pull something off before the end of Ramadan.

White House officials did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

In late May, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly said the State Department would break with recent tradition and not host a Ramadan reception, as it had done nearly annually for two decades. On Saturday, Tillerson released a brief statement sending “best wishes to all Muslims celebrating Eid al-Fitr.”

“This holiday marks the culmination of Ramadan, a month in which many experience meaning and inspiration in acts of fasting, prayer, and charity,” Tillerson said in the statement. “This day offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared commitment to building peaceful and prosperous communities. Eid Mubarak.”

To celebrate Ramadan, we should feast on barbecued hog ribs washed down with Crusader ale.

LOL! They don’t give a Jihad. You would think that considering the bad name terrorism is giving Islam that Muslims would take to the streets word wide and hold massive protests against terrorism, millions of them crowding streets screaming NO MORE, but they really don’t give a Jihad do they.

Do they celebrate Christmas in Saudi Arabia? If our government celebrates Ramadam it must celebrate a thousand Hindu holidays, Kwansa, Pastafarian holidays, etc. Hillary was not elected so the White House will not be celebrating Walpurgis Night. Not celebrating Ramadan is a long held American tradition going all the way back to May 27.

"first time in nearly two decades"

I caught that weaselly wording, too. Perhaps 15 or sixteen years, tops.

They generously rounded that "nearly" word up.

And I seriously doubt that even GWB celebrated the WHOLE month of Ramadan.

I'm 50, and I don't recall any other POTUS before Bush even *mentioning* Eid or Ramadan in any capacity. (Why would they?)

There are so many religions, and each one celebrates their own holidays.

Is the President some kind of "hater" if he doesn't do something "special" for each one?

This “long tradition” should have ended the day the “long tradition” of not attacking buildings and citizens in New York City ended.

George W. Bush’s slimy attempts to make nice with US Muslims, instead of rounding them up and sending them back, was a disgrace.

I'm certain WaPost writer, Amy WANG, is very concerned about President Trump "ending a long tradition of celebrating Ramadan at the White House."

My God, Amy's surname, Wang, is a dead-bang giveaway! She must be a Muslim herself, right? LOL.

This tradition goes back to molly-coddleling President B.J. Clinton, for crying out loud, and was carried through each year by politically correct Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, for all the good it did.

Praise God and President Trump for having the good sense to put an end to this Ramadan nonsense.

Our Republic remains a Christian-Judeo nation. Ramadan and all other Moslem crap has no place in our White House.

I hear that this year the Bush family is going to have just a small, down-home family celebration of Eid Ramadan …

In the early days of December 1805, a handful of prominent politicians received formal invitations to join President Thomas Jefferson for a White House dinner.

The President delaying dinner time until after sunset for the convenience of an invited ambassador is not the celebration of a foreign religious feast. Since sunset is about 4:45 pm local solar time at Washington's latitude in mid-December, it wasn't a huge shift in schedule.

Bush I - Obama was an anti-American, globalist interregnum as far as I am concerned. A long, soft coup against American primacy and sovereignty.

I’m loving this. I also need to observe ramadan next year. Pork sausage, roasts, bacon, barbeque, beer and firearms practice every day. Culminate with a day of fasting and prayer for judgment on that 1,400 year long bloody, filth caked crime spree.
