To small island nations where the land juts just above the rising seas, the U.S. pulling out of the Paris global warming pact makes the future seem as fragile and built on hope as a sand castle.
Top scientists say it was already likely that Earth's temperatures and the world's seas will keep rising to a point where some island states may not survive through the next 100 years.
That likelihood increases, they say, if the United States doesn't follow through on promised cuts in heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions.
President Donald Trump this month said he'd withdraw the United States from the climate deal , prompting leaders of vulnerable islands to talk about their future with a mixture of defiance, hope and resignation.
'If we really push into action, we can save some (small islands) but we may not be able save all of them,' said Hans-Otto Wanker, a German scientist who chairs the climate impacts study group for the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
'The chances are even less with the U.S. pulling out of the climate agreement in Paris.'
While calling Trump's announcement 'deeply disappointing,' Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine told The Associated Press
'I cannot give up on my people and my country and my culture. It's very important for us to be optimistic.'

I thought islands pop up and disappear in the natural coarse of things.
It’s all about the money.
congress critter johnson sez "They all gwana capsize, when too many peoples goes to one side of the island, and all of that debreez gwana conflugate the andvirooonnmant including the great barristar reefers".
The 1841 book "Extraordinary Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" by Charles Mackay pretty much summarizes the human-caused global warming/climate change panic. In this case, cynically, the myth is being propagated to a scientifically dumbed-down populace by the government, media and academia for globalist, socialist ends.
Like the Dutch "Tulip Bubble" and the Y2K madness, this too will pass. But it will leave an extraordinary amount of economic and intellectual/scientific damage in its wake.
I bet some of them will tip over!
Yea right, .05 of a degree increase by 2100 and .17 if Paris extended 70 years is not going to “doom” any island. The sun activity does more than than in 5 seconds. Reason and rationality are not in the Lefts capabilities.
People 'vote with their feet' - the price of small islands is up...
Al Gore's been saying this for years... "the oceans are rising" yet NOT ONE island has gone under water anywhere in the world due to rising water.
There was a post a few days ago that speculated ‘global warming’ was a Russian disinformation scam to get ‘first world counties’ to throw away money and ‘advantage’... it seems possible.
These articles could be written by a computer. Just put in a couple of particulars, and some made up name, and press “PRINT”.
I think this one is definitely made up. The name Hans Otto Wanker is the dead giveaway.
If I had to choose, Ginger.
But we’re going to be on this island for a long time, so it may not be necessary to choose...
Are Tsunamis caused by Global warming? I would worry more about that than high tide if I lived on a low Island. My elevation here is about 11’ above sea level. I don’t lose sleep over it. We just got hit with a tropical storm, and we expect more.
#1 - Mary Ann, back in the day.
#2 - The U.S. Coast was supposed to be flooded by now, according to Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth”. So, I guess all of those islands that have been seen since then are actually illusions.
#3 - The global warming hysteria is a two-part phenomenon.
The first part is the elites trying to scam wealth and power from the masses. The elites may or may not believe in the actual existence the phenomenon, but considering they believe in nothing but themselves and their power, they probably are global warming infidels - not that it matters; it’s irrelevant to the goal.
The second part is merely the reaction of the masses to the elites’ propaganda campaign, that reaction being quasi-religious since the elites pose as the clergy of neo-Earth-Mother worship.
I almost forgot.
How is a wall supposed to keep the sea levels from rising when you can’t even depend on one to keep out illegal immigrants?
Dumb, dumber and dumbest.
Pacific islands ‘growing not shrinking’ due to climate change
Uh move?
Save the islamds! Starve billions without realistic expectation it will work instead!
Notwithstanding that this Climate deal encourages the massive third world to overconsume.
Well if we can dream then I say Both!-)
I read the article and it seems possible. I don't know for sure who originated the scam -- I've traced it back as far as Maurice Strong, the first U.N. Environment Program chief, who organized the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, which led to the launch of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.
But don't you find it somewhat suspicious that Mikhail Gorbachev went from leading the USSR to founding Green Cross International? He became an "environmentalist" for whatever reason, but he never stopped being a Communist.
