“America is a continent. Canadians, Mexicans, Central and South Americans are all “Americans”

Who else beside us call themselves Americans?”

RL, I respectfully disagree, sir. There is only one country on the planet with the word, “America” in its name and that would be.....THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and DON’T YOU EVER FORGET IT!

No one except born Americans are true Americans! The name of our country tells me so. When I have said that to South and Central Americans they stand there with their mouths agape and cannot respond. They are simply dumbfounded by the truth!

Murica! Just so no one is confused. Canadia is Murica's hat, and Meheeko is Murica's britches. :)

Funny think about that. Only a couple of days ago I was watching TV and a Brazilian referred to being American, in Portuguese of course.

The constitution of 1891, establishing the United States of Brazil (Estados Unidos do Brasil), granted extensive autonomy to the provinces, now called States.
They changed to Federative Republic of Brazil (República Federativa do Brasil) after their military coup d'état in 1964.

Brazil appears to be proud that considering the continental landmass only, they are the largest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Also, it seems the Portuguese in Brazil have a greater claim to the name, America, than we do.
At the invitation of king Manuel I of Portugal, Amerigo Vespucci participated as observer in several voyages that explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502. On the first of these voyages he was aboard the ship that discovered that South America extended much further south than previously thought.

The expeditions became widely known in Europe after two accounts attributed to Vespucci were published between 1502 and 1504. In 1507, Martin Waldseemüller produced a world map on which he named the new continent America after the feminine Latin version of Vespucci's first name, which is Americus.

I agree with you completely. I am an **American** . If others want to be known as Americans they can change the name of their countries. Hey! How about Costa Rican States America?

Another peeve:

If I can learn to say San Jose, Costa Rica, then Latinos can learn to say NEW YORK along with other place names in our nation.

Most people I know from South America will say they are “Americans”.
