My hubs has a lot of Czech blood and I’ve got some Hungarian. Or at least, that is where one of my g-grandfathers was traced back from. Don’t really know if he was Hungarian though cause his original surname is googling as “Jewish” not pin pointing a place of origin.
Depending upon where one lived, when sur names were first being handed out, someone living in what was then part of Hungary ( which could be where we now say is Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, etc.! ) could be a place name ( a la NEW YORKER ), a phsyical characteristic ( small, large, fat, black hair, etc. ), a local landmark, or a profession ( miller, smith, taylor, farmer, etc. ) and could also be in German or Hungarian. Yes, it is a bit confusing, but also very interesting. :-)
And "Jewish" is a silly label for a name! How so? Well, there were once a LOT of Italian Jews and none of them had/have what anyone might care to call a "JEWISH LAST NAME"!
The same is true for Jews who came to America from Spain or Portugal; as well as other nations.
