Senate Judiciary leaders to meet with Mueller - POLITICO
Key senators on the Intelligence Committee, which is leading the congressional investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 campaign, had a private meeting with Mueller last week to ensure their respective probes don't conflict with each other.The Senate Intelligence Committee has announced that it is NOT going to investigate the accusation that Trump obstructed justice in whatever combination of "go easy on Flynn," firing Comey, remarks to Holt, overheard remarks to Russian fellow, and reported requests to CIA, NSA to go public with "Trump in the clear" that anti-Trump forces decide works best for them.But members of the Judiciary Committee, which has broad oversight of the Justice Department and the FBI, have been seeking their own ways to make sure that the congressional probes and Mueller's investigation can run simultaneously.
Rogers and Coats met with the Intelligence Committee behind closed doors last week, and so did Mueller.
All of that leading up to my point, and opinion. If Senate Judiciary decides to investigate obstruction, it signals that Mueller is not.
With Trump having been publicly accused of obstruction or abuse of power, the only way to salvage part of his reputation on that count is a public reveal of the results of an investigation. Somebody has to do it. Senate Intelligence isn't going to do it; and if Mueller has no plan to investigate and report on the accusation, Feinstein will feel compelled to have Senate Judiciary do it.
Schiff, over in the House, is also pushing to have the House Intelligence Committee investigate the accusation that Trump obstructed justice. But he's a nutcase, and would push for that even if a hundred other entities were looking into the question.
