The hip area has some major bleeders that cannot be accessed easily for hemostasis. Several times I've treated dogs with bullets to that area thinking successfully and only later watch them bleed out into the tissue where I didn't have a clue it was happening.

If the bullet nicked his femoral artery, it is very serious. If left untreated, most people will bleed out in 5 minutes. Fortunately for him and us, there was a veteran army medic and surgeon at the scene that stabilized him until the emt’s arrived on location. Thank God! Another reason to carry at all times. If he didn’t have his security detail (most of us don’t) he and many others would have been dead before the police could have gotten there.

“The hip area has some major bleeders that cannot be accessed easily for hemostasis.”

I heard a report earlier today indicating that that is the problem.
