There are a lot of large blood vessels and nerve bundles in the “hip” area. I’m guessing he lost a lot of blood.

Large and small intestines are both in that region. Bone chip could have punctured them. If so, would explain the long surgery.

Didn't Hamilton died from a shot to the hip in his duel with Aaron Burr? Of course you'd think today's medical knowledge would give a better chance of survival.

He probably bled a lot waiting for EMTs. Shot probably shattered his hip. Tricky surgery.

He just needs extra care of an ICU

Yes it did. The bullet tore up many vital organs, thankfully missing the heart and lungs though. He and his family are my prayers
