Stelter asks, “what do we do about it?” First you have to correctly diagnose the problem. Blaming it on Trump’s tweets reveals just how delusional these people are. People do not trust the media because they lie. The internet has allowed people to discover these lies. Once your credibility is lost it is almost impossible to regain it. With the election of Trump media lies have only gotten worse. You can go back to William Randolph Hearst bragging about getting the U.S. into the Spanish-American War. NYT’s Walter Duranty’s coverage of the Ukrainian famine. Dan Rather and Stelter might try reading former CNN head Eason Jordan’s op-ed “The News We Kept to Ourselves”. Your solution: shut down the internet and reestablish your monopoly on information.

I have long said that what the media must do is the one thing they cannot do: stop lying.
