Princeton op-ed says ‘hate speech’ not protected by 1st Amendment because it’s an ‘action’

A Princeton University student believes that, the pesky First Amendment notwithstanding, offensive speech should be restricted because it really is … an action.

Comparative literature major Chang Che apparently thinks just because he’s read J.L. Austin’s How To Do Things With Words it should magically apply to a couple of centuries of free speech jurisprudence.

One of my husband’s older friends says that when he was in Vietnam he was stationed at Kum Quat Yam which was just south of Chu Mai Dong.

Sadly, I took him seriously the first time I heard that!

I looked up his fbook account, and it says that his hometown is Yokohama, Japan, which makes me wonder how our rights are even any of his business.

How the Ivy League schools have fallen. This kid needs to take a few courses about our Constitution with Robert P. George.

Speech is speech. Actions have also been deemed as speech under 1st Amendment; flag burning for one example, so that is incorrect anyway.

The danger of liberals defining speech as an action is that it gives them permission to “take action” in response to speech.
If you claim that hate speech is equivalent to physical assault, you can now hit the speaker and claim self defense - they acted / spoke first.

The irony is they declare all sorts of actual actions to be speech from flag burning to vandalizing of property, but mere words now “Actions”?

At what point does an action actually get defined as something physically done vs something merely said? Or are we going to define ‘action’ as something you simply don’t like?
