I agree with CMB. These fast moving crises - pulling in different alliance blocks - are very ominous.

The same point was made, back in May 2017 by a highly placed Australian military man:

Former defence force chief Chris Barrie says the world is on a countdown to war and a ­“complacent” Australia will not be ready when it comes.

Admiral Barrie warned that Australia had been involved in “proxy wars” in Afghanistan and the Middle East in the past two decades, but the potential flashpoints for international-scale con­flict reminded him of the build-up to World War I.

I also concur with CMB.

I don’t think its exactly like WWI, the specific dynamics and issues are a little different, but I think this may be a case of history rhyming but not repeating.

I think its coming.
